APA campaign arrives in Portimão to promote summer recycling

From July 24 to 26, Portimão Marina will host the final stop of the “Roadshow”—a campaign promoted by the Portuguese Environmental Agency (APA).

This initiative aims to raise public awareness regarding the proper sorting of urban waste, particularly during the summer, which is the peak period for waste generation in the country. Over the three-day event, the venue will feature various activities for all ages, including games, material reuse workshops, a recycling quiz, and a simulator designed to assess sustainable consumption habits. The event also includes a mural where visitors can learn about the most common reasons people give for not sorting their waste—part of an effort to encourage behavioral change.

The campaign is part of the national strategy “Let’s separate the waste”, through which the APA seeks to highlight the importance of maintaining recycling habits during the holidays—a time when the volume of waste produced rises significantly.

According to agency data, over 1.8 million tons of urban waste were generated in Portugal between June and September 2025; August alone saw more than 480,000 tons, marking the highest figure of the year. After visiting several districts across the country, the roadshow concludes in Portimão, though the awareness campaign itself will continue until the end of 2026, aiming to foster more responsible waste management and boost recycling rates.

APA’s mobile unit raises awareness in Portimão about waste separation

Portimão is the final stop of the “Roadshow” that traveled through six districts to raise public awareness about recycling during the summer.

From Friday to Sunday, the Portimão Marina hosts the final stop of the “Roadshow” organized by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) to raise awareness about the proper sorting of urban waste. The initiative traveled through six districts—from Braga to Portimão—and is part of the “Let’s separate the waste” campaign, which aims to highlight the increase in waste generation during the summer and the need to maintain recycling habits while on vacation.

The mobile unit will be open to the public on Friday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Saturday from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The APA explains that the initiative invites Algarve communities to reflect on the importance of correctly sorting household waste. The sustainable trailer features a quiz to test participants’ knowledge of waste sorting and a sustainable consumption simulator that identifies different consumer profiles.

The program also includes workshops for creating art from recycled materials, family-friendly games, and other environmental information and awareness activities. The initiative features a mural that collects the reasons given by the public in each location for not sorting waste correctly. According to the APA, this “mural of excuses” seeks to challenge communities “to make fewer excuses and recycle more.”

This new phase of the “Let’s separate the waste” campaign focuses on the period when Portugal sees the greatest increase in urban waste generation. According to data released by the APA, over 1.8 million tons of urban waste were produced in the country between June and September 2025. In August alone, the volume exceeded 480,000 tons.

The agency identifies July and August as the most critical months, with August recording the highest volume of waste. Against this backdrop, the organization urges people to continue properly sorting their waste during the holidays—whether at home, while out and about, or during gatherings with family and friends. “Contrary to popular belief, summer is typically the period when the most waste is generated in Portugal. This trend is expected to continue this year.

However, it is important to emphasize that waste generation doesn’t take a break or rest during the summer. With this initiative, we hope to engage communities in an issue that concerns everyone, from the Algarve to the Minho,” states APA President José Pimenta Machado.

Although Portimão is the final stop for the “Roadshow,” the “Let’s separate the waste” campaign will continue through the end of 2026.

An official visit to the site—located near Horta das Laranjeiras in Rossio de São Brás—took place on Saturday morning and was attended by City Councilor Jerónimo José and Ana Cristina Carrola, a member of the APA’s Board of Directors, among other officials.

Promoted by the APA with support from the Environmental Fund and co-financing from European funds, the roadshow travels to various locations across the country. An APA campaign highlighting the urgent need for proper waste separation will be at Rossio in Évora

The Portuguese Environmental Agency (APA) is marking the start of summer with a communication, awareness-raising, and information campaign highlighting the urgent need for proper urban waste separation in Portugal; the initiative will travel across six districts of the country, from Braga to Portimão.

The next stop for APA’s summer awareness campaign is the city of Évora, at Rossio de São Brás, running from Friday (9:00 AM – 6:00 PM) and Saturday (9:00 AM – 8:00 PM) through Sunday (11:00 AM – 6:00 PM).

In the coming days, a traveling truck—or “Roadshow”—will invite the communities of Coimbra to reflect on the importance of sorting the waste generated in their homes. The Roadshow’s sustainable trailer features a quiz testing the public’s knowledge of proper waste separation, a sustainable consumption simulator that identifies consumer profiles, workshops for creating art from recycled materials, and various games for the whole family, among other activities.

The Roadshow also features a mural that collects the excuses people give for not sorting their waste correctly at each stop—the “mural of excuses.” This thought-provoking mural aims to challenge the public to make fewer excuses and recycle more. This new phase of APA’s “Let’s separate the waste” campaign draws attention to the time of year when urban waste generation spikes.

Between June and September 2025, over 1.8 million tons of urban waste were produced, with Portugal generating more than 480,000 tons in August alone. The summer campaign aims to highlight the period of peak waste generation, as July and August are the most critical months in Portugal, with August seeing the highest volume of waste produced. In this context, the APA highlights the urgent need for proper waste separation during the summer holiday period, promoting responsible behaviors that ensure waste is correctly routed for recycling.
