APA campaign arrives in Portimão to encourage waste separation
APA campaign visits Portimão to raise public awareness about the proper sorting of urban waste.
From July 24 to 26, Portimão will host a stop on the “Roadshow” for the national campaign “Let’s separate the waste”. Promoted by the Portuguese Environmental Agency (APA), the campaign aims to raise public awareness regarding the correct sorting of urban waste during the summer.
The initiative comes at a time when waste generation reaches its annual peak. According to the APA, over 1.8 million tons of urban waste were produced in Portugal between June and September, with August recording the highest volume—exceeding 480,000 tons.
The awareness-raising campaign features a traveling truck that will visit six Portuguese cities, concluding in Portimão. Its goal is to highlight the importance of recycling and proper waste sorting during a season characterized by increased consumption and a high concentration of tourists and visitors.
Throughout the three-day event, the public can participate in various activities, including a waste-sorting quiz, a sustainable consumption simulator, art workshops using recycled materials, and games designed for different age groups.
The roadshow also includes a participatory mural where visitors are invited to reflect on the reasons commonly given for not sorting waste correctly—an effort aimed at encouraging more responsible behavior.
In a statement, APA’s president José Pimenta Machado notes that “contrary to common belief, summer is consistently the period of highest waste generation in Portugal,” emphasizing the importance of engaging communities in adopting more sustainable practices.
The initiative takes place in Portimão from July 24 to 26. Opening hours will be from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Friday, 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Saturday, and 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Sunday.
The “Let’s separate the waste” campaign runs until the end of 2026.
